The deplatforming of Donald Trump following the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot is the most consequential social media ban in the short history of the medium. Twitter permanently suspended Trump's account with 88 million followers, citing risk of further incitement to violence. Facebook and Instagram suspended his accounts for at least the duration of his presidency; YouTube removed his channel's ability to post. The coordinated nature of the action — multiple platforms acting within days of each other — and the unprecedented nature of the target — the sitting President of the United States — made the decision globally significant. The existence of alternative platforms is cited by critics of platform regulation as evidence that the 'marketplace of platforms' can address speech suppression concerns without government intervention — users who are banned from one platform can find alternatives. Skeptics argue this misunderstands the network effects that give dominant platforms their value: a user's followers, professional contacts, and audience exist on the dominant platforms, not on the alternatives, and moving to a less popular platform means losing most of one's effective audience regardless of the technical availability of the alternative.
AI, Automation, and the Future of Platform Bans
Artificial intelligence is transforming how platform bans and content moderation operate, at the same time that AI-generated content is creating new challenges for moderators. AI moderation systems now make the vast majority of content removal decisions on major platforms — identifying policy violations, assessing severity, and taking enforcement action faster than any human team could. The scale of AI moderation means that the due process concerns about platform bans will only intensify: when billions of decisions are made by automated systems, the fraction that are wrong in absolute terms represents a massive number of individual users affected by incorrect enforcement.
AI-generated content creates new categories of platform ban policy disputes. When an account posts AI-generated text, images, or video without disclosure, is that a violation of authenticity policies? Should AI-assisted content creation require disclosure? If a human user employs an AI tool to help manage a large number of posts, does that cross into the automated behavior that platforms prohibit? These policy questions are unresolved across major platforms, and enforcement of existing policies against AI-assisted inauthentic behavior is difficult because the line between AI assistance and AI automation is not technically clear.
